University Grants Commission seeks opinion on dual degree

AHMEDABAD: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sought suggestions from all universities in India, including the Gujarat University, on the dual degree courses that can be offered to the students.

GU registrar Arvind Bhandari said that the GU has been mulling over offering dual degrees to the students to enable them to pursue different courses within the same time period. This will help them to be better equipped for the job market in a shorter span of time.

"We have decided to call for suggestions from all heads of departments and senior academicians over the two degree courses which can be offered simultaneous to the students. We will send it to the UGC within the required time frame. This is a good initiative which will benefit students," said Bhandari.

Former vice-chancellor Dr Parimal Trivedi had also proposed offering dual degrees in the GU. Here, courses like MBA and diploma in banking, port management, which complement each other, can be allowed to be pursued at the same time.

Similarly, students who are pursuing post-graduate courses can be allowed to pursue part-time management degree or diploma courses. This will help them get two degree without spending too many years in the academia.

The opinions and suggestions have to be sent to the UGC which will assimilate the suggestions received and later decide on probable combinations of degree courses. Students also seem enthused by the idea. "It would be great we are offered dual degrees. The rule do not permit the same right now," said Shimul Pandya, first year science student.
