Andhra University College of Engineering (AUCE)
has set up a bio-metric thumb impression attendance system to keep a
watch on students who are bunking classes. A pioneering move, this is
the first system in the state that uses a student’s thumbprint to
improve overall attendance percentages. The ultimate motive of this step
is to ensure that students have enough attendance to sit for the annual
exams.
The system cost over 5
lakh and was installed three months ago at 12 different points in the
campus. This included 11 select departments and one checkpoint at the
principal’s office. The university is currently running the system on a
trial basis and has made it operational for all first year students.
The college will expand the system to all 40 departments in the
following academic year and do away with the old system of a manual
register book, maintained by a clerk officer.
The system is being introduced in phases. Initially, a few students,
in their first year, from select departments were chosen wherein their
thumbprints and profiles were uploaded onto the system. Registration for
the rest of the students at the university will begin soon. Each
student will be given a personalized bio-metric code, which will be used
to check that particular student’s attendance. The profile uploaded
will help university authorities detect any misbehavior or mishandling
of the code or thumbprint. Ultimately, the university is hoping to boost
attendance and help students gain enough attendance to be eligible for
their exams
As per the University, the system has already yielded Results by improving overall punctuality and attendance.
