Recently, 17 medical colleges in India
have been caught in the act of employing “fake faculty” members. This is
despite the many steps that have been taken to prevent such
occurrences. This was brought to the notice of the Lok Sabha today. In a
written reply, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ghulam Nabi
Azad, announced that “show cause notices” have been issued to all the
erring colleges.
  All the medical
colleges with the incident have been issued “show cause notices” by the
government. The CBI, in a few cases, has taken stricter action by
issuing charge sheets and sending self-contained notes to the Medical
Council of India to take further action.
The MCI in turn has directed the authorities to remove the names of
those fraudulent doctors from the Indian Medical Register. These cases
pertain specifically to those doctors who have been included in the
faculty of the college, but have never taught there.
The Minister for Health and Family Welfare, insisted that the
institutes guilty of such fraudulent behavior would be punished. Under
the Establishment of Medical College Regulations, 1999, these colleges
wouldn’t be eligible for permission or recognition of both MBBS as well
as their post-graduate degrees, for another 2 years.
To prevent further instances of malpractice the number of faculty
members in every college would be counted every year, in addition to
which the details of the teaching faculty member will be posted on the
MCI website to make the process as transparent as possible.
