CBSE announces on-screen marking for Board exams in 2013

To reduce the chances of errors and ease the process of evaluation, the CBSE has now introduced on-screen marking of answer-sheets for the Std. XII and X, which will be enforced from next academic year onwards.
As per the Board’s plan, the new digital system will be brought to use in two phases, with the beginning of its first phase, in March 2013, for class X with around three lakh answer-sheets in number.
It’s expected that the number of answer-sheets to be corrected at the first attempt is going to be a lot less in number than what the entire workload would be. This is due to the fact that the Board exams for class X are optional.
The on-screen evaluation of answer sheets for class XII will begin in 2014. Including class X answer-sheets, between 2013 and 2014 the board is likely to examine around 15 lakh answer-sheets.
To set up the required software and infrastructure in place, a tender for two service providers has been floated by the board.
As per CBSE, the new system is expected to boost the speed and improve the quality of the process, bringing more transparency in the process of evaluation.
The answer books given by the examination centre will be delivered to the appointed service provider by the chief secrecy officer of X/XII board examination in sealed packets/bags. The answer books will also be fixed with numbers or direct bar-codes or coded stickers.
The examiners will be trained in using the software associated with the process after which the answer-sheets will be put on screen, after scanning.
