IIT-Kharagpur all set to commence medical program

IIT(Indian Institute of Technology) Kharagpur is all set to start a new medical course. The centre has sanctioned a 400-bed superspeciality hospital on the IIT-Kharagpur campus. The hospital will have a medical college attached to it so that IIT-Kharagpur can easily commence the medical course. Once the course commences, IIT-Kharagpur will be one of the first IITs to impart medical education elong with technology.
The project requires around Rs 230 crore, out of which, the centre will provide about Rs 150 crore and the rest will be arranged by the institute itself. Till date, an initial amount of about Rs 75 crore has already been sent by the centre.
IIT-Kharagpur and the Centre together have chosen HSCC, a public sector enterprise, for the project. HSCC offers professional consultancy services in the health care sector to both private and state-running hospitals. As per a source, the enterprise is in the process of finalizing the architect who will design the building plan.
A modern building, with minimal energy consumption at the south-east-end of the premises, shall be constructed on a 45-acre plot. The construction has been scheduled to start before October.
The premier institute already runs a postgraduate degree course in medical technology, which has been acclaimed throughout the country. The success of the aforementioned course had encouraged the institute, about 5 years ago, to commence a proper undergraduate medical course recognized by MCI (Medical Council of India). But, the institute faced various legal and technical challenges as never before in India, a technical school had tried to introduce medical education. Moreover, another problem faced by IIT-Kharagpur was that while the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) run the IITs across the country, medical education comes under MCI (Medical Council of India), which falls under the health ministry.
However, both the ministries have finally agreed on this particular project after much deliberation and persuasion. Sources also revealed that the institute will have both medical and educational tie-ups with the AIIMS.
Several international collaborations will also take place with the implementation of the plan as the institute is already in talks with the John Hopkins University for possible tie-ups in the future. John Hopkins University is the leading university in the US for genetics, bio-medical research and medicine.
