Until the early 2000s, the establishment of the universities has been the major importance of the Indian government. Because of the growth in the Indian academy and the incompetence of the government to increase the expenditures has led to the development of the private universities. There are around 42 such UGC recognized government universities in India.The following is a list of top western universities in India. Each university is selected depending upon the factors which include subject ranking, quality of education.
University of Mumbai -
University of Mumbai established in 1857, was earlier known as University of Bombay, is one of the oldest and premier universities in India. As a sequel to the change in the name of the city from Bombay to Mumbai, the name of the University has been changed from "University of Bombay" to "University of Mumbai", vide notification issued by the government of Maharashtra and published in the Government Gazette dated in 1996. The University concentrated its efforts on controlling teaching at the undergraduate level and in conducting examinations.
The independence of the country led to the re-organization of the functions and powers of the University with the passing of the Bombay University Act of 1953. In the last five years it has seen 104% increase in under-graduate students, 112% increase in post-graduate students and 147% increase in distance - education students. There is 156% increase in the number of research papers published in International journals.
Goa University -
Goa University was established in 1985. The university was formed by incorporating the then existing Centre for post graduate instruction and research of the University of Bombay. The university presently has around 24 post graduate departments and 3 centers of studies offering academic programs leading to masters and Ph.D degrees in various disciplines.
The university has 48 professional and non-professional colleges/institutions and undergraduate and postgraduate teachings are affiliated to the university. Goa University has also taken initiatives to provide innovative programs such as distance education program in Information Technology, online program in Geographic Information Science (GIS) in collaboration with the University of Salzburg, the Study India Program with Nihon University of Japan, etc.
SNDT Women’s University -
Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University (SNDT), Mumbai established in 1916 by Maharshi Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karv, is the first Women’s university in India as well as in South-East Asia. The first five women graduated in 1921 from this University. SNDT Women’s University is committed to the cause of women’s empowerment through access to education, particularly higher education, through relevant courses in the formal and non-formal streams. The main goal of this university is to achieve excellence and quality in academic activities and to provide equal opportunities to all students belonging to different social, economic and cultural backgrounds.
Gujarat University -
Gujarat University (GU), Ahmedabad was established in 1949 and was incorporated under the Gujarat University Act of the State Government as a teaching and affiliating University. This was done as a measure of decentralization and reorganization of University education in the then Province of Bombay. Gujarat University has been given a B++ ranking by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Gujarat University is one of the best and most versatile higher education institutions in India.
Gujarat University is an affiliating University at the under-graduate level, while Gujarat University is a teaching one at the post-graduate level. An important feature of this University is the system of external examinations in the Faculties of Arts and Commerce, both and under-graduate and post-graduate levels. The external examinations were introduced with a view to enabling working students and the others who could not afford the high cost of university education to realize their dream.
Bharati Vidyapeeth University -
Bharati Vidyapeeth University (BVDU), Pune was established in 1964. The mission that Bharati Vidyapeeth has defined for itself is to bring about intellectual awakening of people through the spread of education and to prepare human resources needed for all round development, particularly economic, of the country. In 1996, the Government of India, on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission, granted the status of "Deemed to be University" to a cluster of 12 institutions of Bharati Vidyapeeth in appreciation of their academic excellence.
Bharati Vidyapeeth runs more than 78 schools and 60 institutions of higher education, including those of professional education. Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University has 32 constituent units and is one of India's largest multi-disciplinary multi-campus universities. Bharati Vidyapeeth has established five specialized research institutes in the areas of Health Related Sciences, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Applied Chemistry and Social Sciences.
