The British Council has partnered with the department of education, Bihar government on a teacher education project that aims towards improving English taught at the secondary level in all government schools in Bihar.
The project BLISS (Bihar Language Initiative for Secondary Schools) is sponsored by DFID (Department for International Development) UK, will commence from January 2012 and continue till March 2014.
Under the BLISS project, the council has hired Pratham-ASER (Annual Status of Education Report) Center to support the project in the creation of Bihar English Language Profile. The profile attempts to concentrate on information and research gap that prevails in Bihar English language teaching sector.
It plans to create a complete but approachable state profile, which will be an important reference document for project interventions, educational product development and reform. The document will be of help to administrators, state planners, educationalists and professionals. External organizations such as businesses and educational NGO’s can also make use of the profile.
The profile will mainly be employed as a digital resource and will be made freely accessible on international websites and British Council of India websites. A few printed editions will be supplied to key stakeholders.
The Bihar English Language Profile includes components such as teacher training, English teaching, learning levels in English in both private and government schools including private English teaching schools such as British Lingua.
