Vice chancellor of Tamil Nadu-based Dr. MGR Medical University had proposed an alternative to the ‘break’ system. The alternative is once again being considered.
Presently the medical students who fail in their first year exams are
required to wait for 6 months to continue in the same year. As per the
proposed alternative, students can continue their studies in the
following year but will be allowed to write subsequent year’s exams only
once he/she clears the previous year’ exam.
The idea was accepted unanimously. The Tamil Nadu Government Medical
Students Association welcomed the idea and discouraged the current
practice of break system. Sources expressed that the break system is
very discouraging for students particularly those in the first year as
they have to continue as a separate batch and it becomes difficult for
them to integrate with other students.
States such as Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat are already practicing the
carry over mechanism. Dr. MGR Medical University is also expected to
introduce the new system very soon. However, the university is not sure
if it will need MCI’s (Medical Council of India) approval to implement
the same.
