As per many academicians, Indian
university graduates cannot be employed immediately. As a result, it is
not much of a surprise that only one institution from India, IISc (Indian Institute of Science)
has made it to the leading 150 universities list of Global
Employability Survey 2012. A 103-year old institution, IISc renowned for
its technological and scientific research has made a significant
improvement by climbing about 100 places from its previous rank of 2011.
The institute's big leap from last year's 134th to the 35th rank this year depicts its value proposition of producing highly employable graduates.
The survey conducted in the period May-June, 2012 had more than 2500
respondents across 20 countries including recruiters. The survey
analyzed the ideal qualities of a fresh graduate and qualities necessary
for a long-term employment. The survey also examined the universities,
which produce the best graduates in the world.
Even though the IISc is one of the best institutes of the country,
students and professors of the institute claim that the big leap does
not signify anything new. The graduates of the institute have always
attracted employers for several years now. The improvement in IISc’s
performance surprised even the survey organizers. A Paris based HR
consultancy that visited the campus for recruitment revealed that the
climb of nearly 100 ranks by the IISc is one of the biggest surprises.
The ranking is expected to bring significant attention to the IISc
students from the employer’s side.
Why only IISc was selected?
The institute always had a different outlook and has been focusing on
research. Since most of the programs are PG courses, the students
develop required skills responsible for making them employable. The
institute also develops analytical skills among students. The
institute’s interdisciplinary nature, seminars, conferences and
discussions helps students to acquire jobs. The heterogeneous student
body background also played a key role in creating a huge talent pool.
Moreover, Professors have excellent international network which in turn
increases students’ employment opportunities.
Another factor contributing to IISc’s high employability is its
location. Since the institute is located in Bangalore, it is capable of
maintaining a connection with the industry. There are many software
companies, auto parts industries, manufacturing industries,
microelectronic industries and metallurgical industries that help in
getting employment for students of the institute. Bangalore is
immediately connected with well-trained brains and hi-tech innovation,
which enhances the reputation of the institute.
Though the IISc stands out in the list of Global Employment Survey,
professors and students plan to further improve their standards. As per
the Dean, Engineering faculty, IISc aims to offer opportunities to more
number of students to study in the reputed institute. The scholars of
the institute are aiming in contributing more to research work as
currently India contributes only 3 % of the world research literature.
