As per a report, India produces over 5
lakh engineers yearly, but merely 2.68% of them are able meet the
requisite skills required by the IT companies.
As per a report by Aspiring Minds, an employability assessment
company, around 92% engineering graduate students lack algorithms and
computer programming skills necessary for IT product sector while 56%
lack cognitive and soft skills.
IT sector has witnesses approximately 1,282 start ups in the time period of 2008-2012. However, this report exposes a large skill gap.

The study included over 55,000 engineers from more than 250
engineering colleges and employability was estimated by examining these
students on the basis of AMCAT-Standardized Employability Tests.
There is a measurable and clear distinction between talents needed to develop IT products in comparison to classic IT services skill. Though the study identifies employable talent spread across all engineering colleges, developing the country’s IT Product sector would require major investment and focus in evaluating and training students in core IT technology.

The top cities with
employable talent percentage in IT Product segment are Delhi at 10.91%,
followed by Bangaluru at 2.93 % and Kolkata at 4.51 %.
The study further revealed that a small percentage of engineering
students are competent to solve engineering mathematics problem and only
24% students can apply permutation-combination and probability to solve
problems.
