Maharashtra Board students and teachers brood about upgraded syllabus

Though the syllabus for XI and XII has been upgraded by MSBSHSE (Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education) for the academic year 2012-13, the teachers in the junior colleges are worried about the fact that whether students will be able to cope up with the new syllabus, especially, those students who are faring poorly in their semester examination.
The syllabus was upgraded as per the core syllabus prepared by the COBSE (Council of Boards of School Education in India) for mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics. The main objective of the new syllabus prepared on the basis on CBSE curriculum, is to prepare students of junior college for competitive examinations such as JEE and AIEEE.
The students’ performance has dropped remarkable in semester exams. The students who have scored distinction earlier have now scored only 50%-60%. Per paper the students are expected to study from 2 books. The portion is quite different and new from that of the state board. It’s one grade higher. Even CBSE students face difficulties coping with it few times.
The new syllabus is focused in the usage of symbols, international system units, formulations and nomenclature of physical quantities, which is usually found in competitive examinations. The topic that has been incorporated in the syllabus is expected to help the students enhance their problem solving skills.
The new syllabus has made biology and chemistry syllabus to become very vast. It’s difficult to finish the syllabus in the given timeline. Syllabi for Mathematics and physics remain almost same. The teachers are worried about the students while gearing up for the new syllabus.
The students are mainly concerned about their admission to their preferred college. Engineering admissions are likely to be affected if the pass percentage of students falls in HSC examination. As a result the students will have to opt for BSc., which will in turn stress the students. The students who are aspiring for medicals are the ones who are mostly concerned about their score.
Allegedly, teachers have also remarked that the training workshop for the new syllabus was not systematic. There was no distribution for the new syllabus’ model question paper.
As per the state board the new syllabus will be helpful to students for the competitive examinations. The new syllabus will make a lot of national level examination’s hurdles easy to conquer by students. The beginning is a little straggling as always, but is expected to be adapted by the students soon. The books for the new syllabus are still being reviewed.
