Fake identity a big problem in IITs

Two candidates, one from Bihar, who cleared the IIT JEE 2012 and later was selected for a B.Tech program in IIT Bhubaneswar, were identified as fake candidates by the authorities of Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar. The candidate’s fake identity was found during the June admission process when he was unsuccessful in convincing the IIT officials that the photograph on the hall ticket was his.
The candidate had already deposited Rs 40,000 to the institute for admission purpose and had come to the campus for verifying documents. He claimed that the photo was quite old. But when insisted and sent by the officials back to produce his old college identity card, the boy disappeared. However, the IIT officials waited for his return and even sent official letters to his Bihar address but didn’t receive any response. As a result, the boy’s candidature was cancelled.
Sources from IIT-Bhubaneswar revealed that for slight mismatch, usually the authorities don’t insist for several proofs. However, this case was different. Moreover, an inquiry on the case has revealed that the photo on the hall ticket was of some other person and it was altered digitally. Similar cases have been reported earlier.
Ina bid to reduce such cases, the college is now insisting that the candidate photos have the latest date mentioned on it. The IIT officials now are doing a background check for all the 119 students who have taken admission this year.
IIT-Bhubaneswar, which is four years old currently, works from various rented buildings. For its B.Tech course, the institute has 120 seats.
