Paperless communication: Panjab University to e-connect with colleges

CHANDIGARH: Going the e-governance way, Panjab University is all set to connect with its affiliated colleges through a virtual private network (VPN). Meant for all its confidential correspondence with colleges, this network will be supervised by a nodal officer in the colleges. The announcement to start the "paperless communication" was made in the principals' conference held at PU on Friday.

"The network will enable colleges to stay connected with PU and also allow them to share all crucial information through the server. It will become extremely simple for colleges to receive confidential data," says K Tankeshwar, director of PU's computer centre who gave a presentation at the principals' meet. "The colleges would require internet facility to avail this service," he added. PU dean college development council (DCDC) Naval Kishore, vice-chancellor Arun Grover and registrar A K Bhandari chaired the conference on Friday.

Pointing out to the discrepancies in the inspection process of city colleges, principals urged the vice-chancellor to keep a vigil on senators or experts sent to colleges for inspection. Additionally, the members raised an objection on the criteria on which "certain" selection committee members recruit new teachers. On the issue of permanent affiliation of colleges, the dean colleges stated that the UGC has urged the colleges who have completed five years to apply for permanent affiliation. However, he agreed that PU has been taking a lenient view in the matter.

The principals also objected to the collection of funds from college students as "university charges", which are used for development on PU campus. "The funds collected from colleges must also be used for students' welfare, like giving scholarship to deserving students or providing funds to purchase furniture in colleges," said a principal of an affiliated college.
